Aussie Adventures With Pavi

Gold CoastLiving in Gold Coast, Australia has been an incredibly surreal experience thus far. I’m studying at Bond University, a small private school of about 3,000 students. Australian society and culture is pretty similar to American culture, which has made it easy to describe these cities to friends and family back home! I’d say Gold Coast is a lot like Miami, Melbourne is similar to Seattle, and Sydney is a smaller version of New York. The most notable parts of Australian culture I’ve found are the stereotypical yet entertaining slang words, famous Aussie sarcastic humor, and the deliciously spectacular cookies known as Tim Tams (chocolate coated, chocolate malted biscuits).Australian Kangaroo
As Australia is roughly the same size as the US, I know I won’t be able to see as much of the country as I want to, but my trips so far have been phenomenal! I visited the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, located an hour away from Bond during my second week here. I cuddled with koala bears and kangaroos, held a baby crocodile, and did a high ropes course in the forrest! It was without a doubt one of my favorite days in Australia.

Sydney Opera House

This past weekend was equally fantastic. I had the opportunity to travel to Sydney for Mardi Gras with some fellow students. We toured the city, took our token pictures with the Sydney Opera House, and walked through the Art Gallery of New South Wales. We climbed up the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge to see a unique view of the city later that day. That night, our program took us on a small dinner cruise along the Sydney Harbor! The next day, we hiked up to see the Three Sisters in the famous Blue Mountains. There was unfortunately a ton of fog that day, but the view was still gorgeous! That night, we attended the Mardi Gras parade on Oxford Street. In Sydney, Mardi Gras is a huge LGBT pride festival, and the entire city shuts down to celebrate! On Sunday, we did the breathtakingly beautiful cliff walk from Bronte Beach to Bondi Beach on the outskirts of Sydney. Luckily the weather cleared up on the last day of our trip to enjoy the beach!
